'A British singer convicted of assault': How hot favourite for U.S. X Factor Cheryl Cole is being introduced to America

By Sarah Fitzmaurice

'A Brit singer convicted of assault': An influential U.S. blogger doesn't seem overly impressed with Cheryl Cole

She’s hardly known over in the states and Jennifer Lopez only just seemed to be aware of what she does so it’s fair to say that Cheryl Cole has certainly got her work cut out in cracking America.

But now an influential U.S. blogger has described England’s sweetheart as ‘a Brit singer convicted of assault’ and referred to her as ‘this Cole woman’ - not the best introduction she could have hope for.

In an interview with music mogul and X Factor supremo Simon Cowell, Nikki Finke, editor of Deadline Hollywood has revealed that Cheryl is a ‘shoo-in’ for the U.S. version of the show alongside Paula Abdul – but she isn’t holding back on the fact she isn’t convinced by the Geordie singer.

And Finke's opinion matters - not only has she set up Deadline.com before selling it in 2009 for a reported $14million while still remaining as editor-in-chief, but she also writes for L.A. Weekly and is renowned for her strong views.

Finke writes that none of the contestants auditioning for the American version of the show will ‘have a clue about Cole’.

Strong support: Cowell has told Finke that Cheryl is a very special person and said he always wanted Paula to be on the show

The blogger also details Cheryl’s ‘rough’ history including her conviction for assault and subsequent community service.

However the interview does clearly show Simon’s strong support for the pop princess he gushes about Cheryl to Nikki.

Speaking about when he initially hired Cheryl for the British version of the show Cowell told Finke: ‘I’d only met her literally once when I offered her the job on X Factor.

Final lineup: LA Reid will join Cowell on the judging panel while Nicole Scherzinger, who was at one stage tipped to be a judge, will host the show

'I thought she was bright, cute, knew what she was talking about, ambitious. And you meet someone special a few times in your life.. And this girl is special.’

He also quashes rumours, widely reported, that Fox wasn’t convinced by Cheryl.

Cowell said: ‘Mike Darnell and Peter Rice will tell you they wanted her all the time.’

‘They absolutely fell in love with her. In a way, the deal, it was almost conditional on Cheryl having the gig. They were desperate for her.’

And Cowell also reveals he has wanted Paula Abdul all along he said: ‘I've always wanted Paula. Always been very vocal about that. I missed her the second she left the show.’

Deals haven’t been finalised for Cheryl and for Paula- and the only officially confirmed judge being LA Reid- but the final four is quiet clear, Cowell, Cole, Abdul and Reid, with Nicole Scherzinger as host.

But for Finke the lineup doesn't impress and she ponders: ‘Will Cowell with this panel that's more of a "ZZZZZZ Factor" than The X Factor?’

And while she isn't particularly complementary about former Popstars contestant Cheryl, perhaps her most scathing comments are reserved for Cowell himself.

She concludes: 'Cowell wants himself to be the only celebrated celebrity on his new show.'

The TOWIE gang get set for the Royal Wedding, but insist: 'Mark and Lauren's will be bigger!'

By Daily Mail Reporter

Street party: The Only Way Is Essex stars get ready for the Royal Wedding with a patriotic street party

They are BAFTA nominees and some of the most talked-about people in the country but, alas, the cast of The Only Way Is Essex have not been invited to the Royal Wedding.

The reality stars aren't concerned about the snub though, as they insist that the nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton will pale in comparison to those of their own betrothed couple, Mark Wright and Lauren Goodger.

Even so, the Essex gang will be celebrating on Friday and have thrown a patriotic street party in preparation.

Decked out in blue, red and white, the cast including Amy Childs, Sam Faiers and Joey Essex have posed for a new! magazine photoshoot and each give their opinion on the upcoming wedding.

Lauren, whose engagement party on last week's episode made quite an impression with arrivals on horseback and her in a dazzling white gown, declares: 'Me and Kate are in competition.'

Co-star Lydia Bright adds: 'Mark and Lauren's wedding will be bigger.'

Battles of the brides: Lauren Goodger insists her wedding to Mark Wright will be 'bigger' than Prince William and Kate Middleton's nuptials

Where is the carriage? Groom-to-be Mark arrived at his engagement party with best friend James 'Arg' Argent on horseback

Cast members asked during their engagement party how the on/off couple plan to top their extravagant bash, but Lauren replied confidently, 'Oh it is going to be a million times bigger!'

Sam Faiers and Jessica Wright hold a candle for future King, with glamour model turned boutique owner Sam admitting to new! that she 'fancies' Prince William, Jessica adding: 'I'd choose Wills over Harry!'

But others aren't keeping up with the wedding that has gripped the nation.

Joey Essex, who has quickly become a fan favourite for his dim-witted nuances, appears a bit confused by all the fuss, asking 'What wedding?'

While Sam and her sister Billie told Mail Online last week that they would love to dress Kate Middleton, co-star Amy Childs has also weighed in with her style opinion. 'Kate should wear pink,' she says.

Lucy and Harry are also riveted by Miss Middleton's wedding gown.

The fashion worker echoed the thoughts of most of the world, saying 'I want to see the dress.'

'Kate better bring the glam': The super-styled cast (pictured filming yesterday) have high expectations for the wedding fashions, with Amy Childs saying she thinks 'Kate should wear pink'

Harry has high expectations. 'Kate better bring the glam,' he warns.

But while the girls are enraptured with the romance and glamour, James 'Arg' Argent is more focused on the party side of things.

'Let's get drunk,' is his eloquent opinion.

Amy Childs leads the pack as the TOWIE cast film scenes in their native Brentwood in typically Essex style

By Daily Mail Reporter

Girls on film: Amy Childs, Chloe Sims and Billie Faiers hit Brentwood in typical TOWIE style

They've become famed for their excess, so it's hardly shocking to see the cast of The Only Way Is Essex dressed slightly over the top while going about their daily business.

And today the ladies in particular really took their exuberant approach to fashion to new heights as they hit Brentwood to film scenes for the ITV2 show.

Amy Childs, 20, led the spectacle, squeezing her rather ample chest into a slinky white dress with a beige bag and red heels.

Soaring temperatures: The Essex girl squeezed her pneumatic chest into this slinky white number

Of course, the outfit wouldn't have been complete with an obligatory pair of sunshades, and the puffy-lipped reality star didn't disappoint with a large pair of Eighties style glasses.

The rest of the TOWIE girls followed suit, with almost all of them joining Amy in summery light shades.

In fact, it was only Chloe Sims who bucked the trend in a fuchsia chiffon dress with matching strappy wedge heels.

Service with a smile: Sam Faiers and Gemma Collins make their way down Brentwood hight street as the TOWIE cast spend the day filming in the Essex town

She also donned a large pair of sunshades, the kind you might see Victoria Beckham wearing, as the group made their way into affluent Brentwood.

Sam Faiers, who recently opened her own boutique named Minnie's, was also in town with the TOWIE gang.

She arrived looking more casual than the rest of the Essex girls, wearing a light summer dress with an asymetric hemline but kept it sensible in a pair of flip-flops.

Essex and proud: Joey poses in his casual outfit as he makes his way to girlfriend Sam's boutique

Sister Billie joined the light brigade in a one-shoulder, cream dress.

Gemma Collins made a bit of a faux pas in her silver mini dress. With her larger frame the shimmering number made her look like the tin man from The Wizard Of Oz.

One of TOWIE's most popular boys, Joey Essex, was on hand to fill the male contingent during filming.

The man who wore bright orange UGG boots and skinny jeans for a 'glamping' trip on one of last week's shows, this time played it a little more understated.

Man in the middle: Arg pounds the streets with the TOWIE girls

He wore a hooded tracksuit top with jeans and a pair of Nike Air Rift trainers, which have a slit in the front of them to divide the wearer's toes.

For some odd reason he left the Velcro straps undone, possibly a fashion statement or maybe his shoes were just a little too tight for him?

Completing the line was James Argent, or Arg as he's known.

The 23-year-old has a penchant for dressing beyond his years and today's outing was no different.

With his standard combed over, slick hairstyle Arg walked in among the ladies wearing a V-neck jumper, grey trousers and a light pink shirt.

The TOWIE hunk has been at the centre of an ongoing love story, battling to win back his ex-love Lydia.

In a recent interview, he denied he'd cheated on her, as it's been rumoured recently.

He told The Mirror: 'I’m not a cheat. I don’t want to do anything with other girls because Lydia is my soulmate.'

Dec 'wasn't ready to commit'... Georgie Thompson's heartbreak over Donnelly break-up

By Daily Mail Reporter

Couldn't commit? Friends of Georgie's told the tabloid that Dec 'wasn't ready to commit'

Following the news of Georgie Thompson and Declan Donnelly ending their two-year relationship, the Sky Sports presenter has revealed her heartbreak.

Georgie posted on her Twitter page yesterday: ‘Breaking silence momentarily simply to say thank you for all your kind messages this morning. It means a great deal at a difficult time.’

And friends of the 33-year-old have revealed that Dec, 35, called time on the relationship after a heart-to-heart at his London home, telling her he couldn't 'commit'.

A pal of the blonde star told the Sunday Mirror: ‘Georgie really didn’t see this coming and thought things were going well with Dec.

‘She is really hurting because she thought he was ‘The One’ and didn’t want to break up.’

Her Britain’s Got Talent former boyfriend is said to have sprung the news on her once she’d returned from Jamaica.

Georgie had been conducting an interview with athlete Usain Bolt, but was surprised with the breakup on her return to the UK.

The heartbroken star was reportedly hoping for marriage to be the result of their relationship, but Dec apparently ‘wasn’t ready to commit’, according to the tabloid.

The couple were originally set up by their mutual friend, TV host Kirsty Gallacher, and were smitten after just a few dates.

Finding solace in work: Georgie has continued to work as a Sky Spots presenter amidst the split to keep her mind off the breakup

But last week, a spokesman for Donnelly told the Mail: ‘Dec and Georgie’srelationship has sadly come to an end.

‘Nobody else was involved and they remain good friends.

Just last August, Miss Thompson had revealed that Donnelly was her perfect match – and said that her parents loved him.

She said at the time: 'Family is a big thing for both of us, too. We come from completely different backgrounds, but there are certain things in life that I think draw you together and attract you to another person.

‘We have a lot of common threads and a lot of our ideas about life and how you live it are the same, so I think those things pull us together.’

Georgie is apparently being comforted by her family and friends at Sky, such as co-host Millie Code and football pundit Jamie Redknapp.

Happier times: The couple, who dated for two years, at the British Academy TV Awards at the Natural History Museum last year

Wedding fever for Keira! Knightley plays bridesmaid at her brother's ceremony

By Daily Mail Reporter

Step to it: Actress Keira Knightley helps his eldest brother, Kaleb, celebrate his wedding to web designer Kerry Nixon at the Pollokshields Burgh Hall in Glasgow

Less than a week before the Royal wedding, Keira Knightley got into the spirit by playing bridesmaid at her brother’s ceremony today.

The actress arrived at the venue in Glasgow to witness Caleb, 32, marry his designer fiancée Kerry Nixon in front of family and friends.

The 26-year-old Pride and Prejudice star looked lovely in an above-the-knee purple bridesmaid dress, which tied up at the shoulders and boasted a V-neck cut.

Wedding fever: Keira stood by her soon-to-be sister in law, Kerry Nixon, and the other bridesmaid ahead of the ceremony in Glasgow

Her frock was accompanied by simple black heels and a minimalist hairdo, which appeared to have not been styled.

Meanwhile, the bride seemed to be inspired by the 1950s when choosing her gown, which was a long-sleeved cream dress.

The wedding took place at the Pollokshields Burgh Hall and Keira is said to have taken her new boyfriend, Klaxons star James Righton, 27, as her guest.

White cab: Instead of a black cab, the wedding car was a white cab to pick up the bride and groom

Having fun: Keira shares a joke with Kerry as they walk along ahead of the ceremony

She has been dating Righton for two months, after being introduced by their mutual friend Alexa Chung.

Her new relationship came after splitting with ex-boyfriend of five years, Rupert Friend, just before Christmas.

Keira’s mother is Scottish, so it is no surprise that the family chose the wedding venue in Glasgow, where some family members decided to wear traditional kilts.

Despite having a starring role in her older sibling’s big day, Keira will have to quickly jet back to London after the ceremony to appear in The Children’s Hour in the West End on Monday night.

The actress returned to the London stage to take part in the production which sees her character and co-star Elisabeth Moss run a girls’ boarding school in 1930s New England.

They soon become entangled in a devastating story of deceit, shame and courage in the Ian Rickson-directed production.

But before flying back to London, Keira will no doubt take part in the festivities tonight to celebrate her brother’s special day.

Not that he was complaining.

By Daily Mail Reporter

Enjoying the scenery: Ricky Gervais and his long term girlfriend Jane Fallon sipped on white wine and ate lunch at a Primrose Hill cafe

With London’s temperatures soaring to 25 degrees today, it was no wonder that James Corden and Ricky Gervais wanted to enjoy the sunshine with their partners.

But they weren’t expecting to bump into each other at a Primrose Hill café, where Gervais was enjoying a bite to eat with long-term girlfriend Jane Fallon.

Corden and his fiancée Julia Carey were taking their baby son Max for a stroll in north London when they noticed the Ghost Town funnyman having a spot of lunch.

Fancy seeing you here! James Corden and Julia Carey noticed the funnyman as they strolled by with baby Max

The Gavin and Stacey star, 32, quickly ran over to Gervais, 49, to say hello and show off his one-month-old son Max.

Both couples leaned over the pram to take a look at Max and admire the adorable youngster, who was born on March 22.

James and Julia had been soaking up the sunshine on Good Friday too, and took Max to Primrose Hill on the Bank holiday.

During his day in the sun today, Corden tweeted: ‘I love Saturdays that feel like Sundays. Does that make sense? X’

Admiration: The two couples gazed at baby Max in his pram, who is one-month-old

Now where were we? The couple got back to lunching after the surprise visit from his fellow comedian

On both park days, Corden decided to wear a dark T-Shirt and knee-length shorts, while Julia pulled out a white summer dress on Friday and little white shorts today.

While Ricky also opted for a black T-shirt alongside his running shoes that he wore out to lunch.

He and his girlfriend of 29 years sipped on white wine to celebrate the early summer weather.

Meanwhile, Gervais recently told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show that he doesn’t understand why people would want to watch Kate Middleton and Prince William exchange vows next week.

Just one please: The couple bought some bread from a local bakery for to accompany their meal

When speaking about the Royal wedding at its media coverage, the comedian said: ‘Ugh God, I’m trying to avoid it.

‘I don’t even go to my friends’ weddings. Who’s sitting at home on a sunny day watching two people who they will never meet get married.

'I don’t think I’ll be watching it… I’m sure I’ve got something better to do that day… [also] I don’t think I’m a wedding person.’

'You do things I've never seen humans do!' Body-popping breakdancer Razy Gogonea wows on Britain's Got Talent with his Matrix-inspired dance routine

By Sarah Bull

Amazing: Romanian dancer Razy Gogonea wowed the judges on Britain's Got Talent with his Matrix-inspired dance routine

A body-popping breakdancer was the star of the show on Britain's Got Talent tonight when he wowed the judges with his Matrix inspired dance routine.

Romanian dancer Razy Gogonea, 28, bounded onto the stage as he ran on on his knees, dressed as Keanu Reeves' character Neo from the infamous sci-fi movie.

Watched by his girlfriend in the audience, Razy amazed the judges with his unique performance, which saw him bend and move his body like nobody else.

Scroll down for video

Is that you, Neo? Afterwards, the judges praised the creativity of his audition and the beautiful choreography

Afterwards, judge Michael McIntyre said: 'I loved you Razy, there were things I never seen humans do. I thought it was excellent, I really enjoyed watching it. You are Neo from The Matrix.'

Amanda Holden said: 'I found it exciting, you used the whole stage which is very good. Beautifully choreographed, excellent job. Well done!'

And David Hasselhoff added: 'You're like a real life videogame, very very entertaining. Well done.'

Emotional: Ravy couldn't control himself as he received praise from the judges and a standing ovation from the audience

How was it? Asked how he felt by the experience by Ant McPartlin, Ravy replied: 'It was awesome!'

A tearful Razy struggled to contain himself as all three judges voted to send him through to the next round.

The show opened in Manchester, with the judges looking forward to the talent on offer in the city.

Before the auditions started, Amanda said: 'I'm always excited when I come to Manchester - for me it's like my second home.'

Michael then added: 'We're going to have some real genuine talent, I have no doubt that there will be.'

The auditions began with painter and decorator Micky Gooch kicking things off.

Nutter: Martial arts expert Micky said he had been practicing 'like a nutter' for his audition

Incredible: The 54-year-old did a one-fingered press up on top of a nail, but was said to not be entertaining enough for the judges

A 54-year-old martial arts expert, Micky said he 'trained like a nutter' before taking to the stage, boasting that he can 'throw a watermelon in the air and cut it with his fingers'.

Asked by David Hasselhoff what he was going to do, Micky said he would be performing a one-fingered press-up on top of a nail.

Micky managed a staggering 10 push ups on top of the nail, leaving the judges cringing, before his finger slipped off the nail.

Afterwards, Michael said: 'I did feel it's an amazing thing to do more than one of them but ultimately we're looking for entertainment and I wasn't entertained.'

Amanda added: 'It was amazing but I don't think it's enough to make it on to the Royal Variety show.'

Double act: Ted, 91, and his 21-year-old granddaughter Grace are the stars of the show with their double act

We love you! The audience gave the family double act huge applause and a standing ovation

Next up was granddaughter and grandfather duo Ted, 91, and 21-year-old Grace.

Ted revealed he used to be a professional entertainer and gave it up when his daughter was born.

Before hitting the stage, Ted admitted he was concerned about letting Grace down. Struggling to hear what the judges were saying, Ted misheard Amanda asking him if he was retired, saying: 'Yes, I am tired!'

The pair performed If I Was A Rich Man, with Ted things kicking off before Grace joined in with If I Was A Rich Girl. They then sang New York, New York, much to the delight of the judges and the audience.

What's that? Ted struggles to hear Amanda talking to him and uses Grace as his interpreter

And while Ted struggled at points, forgetting to hold the microphone up to his mouth, the pair thoroughly entertained with their performance.

After their audition, David said: 'I think the Queen will love this - this beats the hell out of America's Got Talent. Terrific job, well done.'

Amanda added: 'I really enjoyed it. I thought it was a brilliant, entertaining act.'

Michael concluded: 'I think you should be able to buy a Ted doll and you're holding a microphone but the arm never reaches the face.'

Impressionist Les Gibson, 41, was up next, admitting his ability to impersonate people helped him become more confident at school.

Who are you? Les Gibson stunned the audience with his celebrity impressions

I'm going to smash his head in: Dec was less than flattered by Les' impression

Before performing for the judges, Les said he had been performing impressions full-time for 13 years but sometimes struggled with the insecurity of being a self-employed impressionist.

Les opened his audition with an impression of Ant and Dec, much to the amusement of the Britain's Got Talent presenters.

And while Ant was thrilled with his impression, Dec said he was disappointed that he sounded so camp, laughing: 'I'm going to smash his face in!'

Les then threw in some more impressions of stars including Ross Kemp and Coronation Street's Kevin Webster - leaving the judges and audience in fits of laughter.

Not so good: Comedian Elaine Williams' act didn't go down too well and she was booed off the stage

I'm outta here: Elaine swore at the audience and stormed off the stage

However, while Amanda and Michael were impressed, David looked slightly out of his depth witht he Corrie impersonation.

Afterwards, Michael said: 'I think you were brilliant, I thoroughly enjoyed it. You obviously have a very diverse range.'

And David laughed: 'I had no idea what you were saying but I absolutely enjoyed it because you were confident and you took to the stage and that's what this show is about.'

Amanda added: 'I'm delighted for you because I thought you were fantastic.'

So Les was put through to the next round with three yeses from the judges. Supply teacher Linda and her dog Fen were up next, but failed to impress the panel and received three nos.

Nooooo: Judges David Hasselhoff and Michael McIntyre were not impressed by Elaine's act

Why did you do that? Elaine told Ant and Dec she couldn't cope with being booed by the audience

Musician James Kingg played the keyboard but was quickly buzzed by the judges and was sent home.

Lollipop lady Margaret Austin was also unsuccessful with her audition.

Elaine Williams took to the stage next with a comedy act, after admitting previously that she was in college doing a course on soup and sauces.

However, before her performance, Elaine said she had only performed stand-up comedy about six times.

Cute: Pipp and her puppy Buddy amazed the audience with their performance of Pie Jesu

Say hi, Buddy! The six-month-old dog took his new-found fame in his stride

And she certainly failed to impress the audience, who started chanting for her to get off the stage, to which Elaine said 'f*** off' and left the stage, not even giving the judges chance to say no.

The next segment of the show opened in Birmingham, where the first act up was Pipp and her puppy Buddy.

The pair performed Pie Jesu, with Pipp singing opera and Buddy joining in howling at the highest points.

After receiving a standing ovation from the audience, Pipp gave Buddy a big hug and kiss before waiting for the comments from the judges.

An audience with Edward Reid: Scottish singer Edward performed nursery rhymes to the soundtrack of Snow Patrol's Run

Hitting the high notes: Edward stunned the audience with his humorous performance

Michael said: 'You never know what to expect but this was very surprising.

Congratulations, well done!' David added: 'Very entertaining.'

And when Amanda asked if she would ever consider doing a pop track with Buddy, Pipp replied: 'I could definitely try but he's quite fussy - it's up to him.'

With three yeses, the pair moved on to the next round of the competition.

Drama teacher Edward Reid, 35, was first up when the auditions moved to Glasgow.

Asked what his dreams are, Edward replied: 'This might sound really cheesy but ever since I was a little boy I have wanted to have An audience with Edward Reid.'

Hilarious: David, who missed the point of some of the acts, was thoroughly entertained by the act

Brilliant: And Ant and Dec also joined in applauding the hilarious drama teacher

And Edward left the audience in stitches as he performed Old McDonald Had A Farm and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to the soundtrack of Snow Patrol's Run.

Afterwards, Michael said: 'Edward Reid - nobody saw that coming. I don't know what's going to happen to you after this competition but I can definitely see you being booked for Elton John's child's first birthday party. I didn't think it would come in this form but Glasgow has got talent!'

Amanda added: 'I have a five-year-old daughter and I would so buy your album for her.'

And David concluded: 'Really creative and very funny. Thank God for you. Terrific job.'

Needless to say, Edward got three yeses from the judges and will be seen again later in the competition.
